[] Sneak Peak at SpeedTree 6.0
« on: Apr 06, 12, 07:26:34 PM »

Thought I'd provide a sneak peak, the integration is done, and I have to say, speedtree 6.0 is pretty fantastic, and about as easy to use as any 3rd party tech I've ever used. The pipeline is completely streamlined. 3 clicks and you are from tree to in game....and it converts all your textures to DDS format!

I used my tablet to hand draw this tree in1 6 minutes of fooling with settings, made two PNGs in flash, and voila.

I don't have a build with the correct shaders, so trees don't show up correctly, but I'm pacing out the updates, and there's already been another version update from Speedtree that we'll need to do.

Sapphire deploy is still a while away, so hold your horses. :-)

It's easy to hold some horses.. Level designers are much harder to pacify :D

Riot!!!

On-topic: looking quit nice! Did you draw it with a tablet/cintiq? -> Yes you did.

On-topic 2: Are PNG's not quite intense to use if you use many trees like that?

Ask and thou shalt receive.

Tree 1. Is a palm tree growing up and around a well, which is a separate mesh you can include in the scene and have it render with the tree, or you could make it an invisible collider and then place your own mesh in game. This tree is just a default library asset in SpeedTree.
Tree 2. Just standard textures, bark, leaf, and the roots are growing around rocks that you can't really see. This is low poly, small textures, still looks great.
Tree 3. Medium amount of poly's, 5 minutes of work, template trunk with roots and branches hand drawn, two 256 png diffuse textures, and 1 256 normal map.
Tree 4. Large amount of poly's, ten minutes of work. All hand drawn, then using force modifiers like twist and magnet to twist the trunks and branches. Template "fronds" attached to the branches, 2 diffuse pngs, no normal map.
