Two Lighting Effect Questions
« on: Mar 27, 13, 02:59:58 PM »

We've got a couple of questions about lighting effects:

1 - We want to add a "sun" to our area - for realism, not for actual lighting - and we're thinking of using a normal HE light, and having it move in a big circle, coming up from the eastern side of the area, then going down in the west, and passing under the area during the night - so we're wondering what would be the best way to implement a giant looped light movement like that.

2 - During the night, we want windows of buildings to glow, so we're going to use the HE glow mapping feature - but we're not totally sure how exactly to add a glow map to a mesh, as the wiki info on the subject is a little sparse.

Glow maps are in the alpha of a normal map (you can see this in the Material editor in 3ds max).

As for the sun: that is already in place. Your scripters just need to let the day/night cycle run through script, and that was it :)

Yeah, adding a light would be a strange thing, since the light would need to shine on something to be seen. Just attach a flare to th area's sun position.

So does the mesh need 2 textures, 1 for the main texture and one for the glow?

EDIT: I also can't seem to find the bloom controls on the Environment panel - I can see what they look like on the wiki, but they're, not showing up in the engine.

Glow support was completely re-implemented in the wake of HDR support.

It will be available in one of the next updates, with intensity and color modulation available through the environment scheme (specifically, in the Lighting tab).

Here's an example of a test asset with glowing bits

Cheers

Ok, thanks for that - we'll put this part of our work on hold until that update goes live.

Also, glow maps go in the alpha channel of the diffuse map, not the normal map.

I see my own confusion there, sorry about that! Spec maps are in the alpha of the normal maps :)

Also, as we haven't seen anythign indicating that there's a moon effect similar to the sun one, we're planning on using a single large glow-mapped particle  traveling in a slowc ircle over and under the area to represent it - is that the best way of doing it, or is there another way that we might have missed?

And on a sky-releated note, does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to show actual clouds that a player can fly through?

a moon effect similar to the sun one
When you are using Dynamic Sky, as set on the Schemes tab of the Environment panel, if you check the checkbox "Flip Light at Sunset" then it simulates moonlight.  Just after sunset, it flips position 180 degrees giving you a "moonrise".

Are you asking about the clouds question Stadi?
