This thread is updated to provide information on upcoming HeroEngine releases, features, and changes.

Topaz
The most recent major release is Topaz.  The release notes are available on the
HeroEngine wiki (http://wiki.heroengine.com/wiki/HeroEngine_1_Release_70). 

We will be continuing to release Topaz updates as necessary to add new features and address issues.


Sapphire
The next major release will be Sapphire.

While we don't have a specific date yet, we expect it to be available in the short term.

Among the features and changes we expect in the HeroEngine Sapphire release:

Since I've been asked, I wanted to address the circumstances under which this post is updated:

My preference is to make everyone aware of confirmed features, functionality, and changes sooner than later.

That about covers it.

It does mean more, smaller updates.  But I think that's what is preferred over holding back a lot of information for later.

We will be showing some additional functionality not mentioned here at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), but that is discussed on another thread

I also try to update as frequently as is reasonably possible due to the sheer volume of posts Cooper makes.

The Topaz update has been released.

The new Art pipeline for Autodesk Max 2013 and Maya 2013 has been released as well

We've posted information on the next minor Topaz release, which should be going out everywhere the week of August 27th.

As we've been moving through Topaz and into Sapphire we've been adjusting how we identify releases and updates in order to make it more accessible.  Once Sapphire is released, updates will be identified by a letter, so you'll see Sapphire.a, Sapphire.b, etc.

Topaz
Pending final testing we will be releasing the latest Topaz update (1.73.1) later this week.

While there may be another tiny little Topaz update after this, this is planned to be the last Topaz series update before Sapphire.


Sapphire
While subject to change depending on what we find in release testing, the Sapphire major feature list is complete:

You will soon start to see updates to the wiki reflecting the new HeroBlade and Repository Browser GUIs.

As with our other releases, we will also be running beta access on the cluster 0 test server, as well as working with teams in alpha or beta phases.  We will release more information on this, so please cool your jets.


What's Next?
As with every release, everyone always wants to know, "what's next?"

While there will be a number of major improvements in the short term, I wanted to highlight a couple of them.

There will be larger changes and improvements to animation and character GUI, character import and hookup, and related GUI and systems.

Also, we'll be branching the rendering system, and we'll choose which renderer to run based on the client system specs.

Modulo any of the many engine-level improvements that it benefits from, the Sapphire renderer will be the final Direct3D 9 renderer.

Going forward new renderer level features will go into the new Direct3D 11-based system.

This alone will beget a number of major new features that we'll go into a bit later.
