Title: [Resolved] ETA on the HE Asset Store?
Post by: Amanda_Brooks on Jan 12, 13, 06:26:14 PM
Does anyone know if there's even a vague ETA for the HE asset store? Why I'm asking is that our project has a few libraray gaps that will need to be filled, and while we've already identified exisiting assets at various online stores that would be suitable to fill these gaps, we'd prefer to use ones made specially for the HE.

All information we have is in the news section of our forums. Currently there hasn't been any interest from developers looking to sell assets, so we don't have any plans to publish an asset store in the short term.

Cooper

I have a bunch of random things I built as I was just testing new modeling methods, or used for placeholders, or are planned for my game but are generic I wouldn't care to turn over on a public license. I just don't have a good mechanic beyond like mediafire to post them up, and then not a great way to post them here for distribution.

So not a full on asset store, but more of a asset warehouse. I'm sure there would be a few other devs willing to toss out a few things, but maybe not. I could be way off on that.

I updated the news thread and stickied it with all the information.

I was hoping as well. I would rather have you HE folks to get the cut on the sale of the assets then some sites like turbosquid.

Cooper you guys have a potential goldmine with all the assets from Heroes Journey. If you added those as well to start off the store it would not only give new developers content to start off with that they could build upon, but all those assets could see a life beyond sitting on a dead reference world. plus the amazing quality of the art would raise the bar for assets submissions from other developers who want a store.

I love props creation so I will be selling them in packs.

Lets support this folks, ANY revenue to help develop your game is good revenue.

If you build it, they will come.

lol yeah, i've been building up a storm, to get prepared for it. Don't have many things to send to their email yet, cause I wanted to improve the quality a bit.

Could you please provide an update on whether the store will go ahead?

If you have assets you'd like hosted in the store, just send an email to sales@heroengine.com with some shots of your assets. Currently there isn't enough interest in selling assets for us to commit the resources, so it's not currently on our schedule.

I see no reason for assets store. 99% you need custom made assets to fit your game. And to buy generic overpriced stuff.. no thanks.

Better let Hero devs focus on other stuff that doing an asset store.

I personally would not mind having a database of generic particle effects, like fire/explosions/snow/rain etc. I think with little customization, those could be reusable in more then one game.

Particle effects are definitely something that would be useful - modelers are quite easy to recruit for volunteer teams, and even animators arent' that rare - but VFX artists  are much thinner on the ground.

And while I love making stone statues all day long, if I can buy a pack and toss it into my game for some fluff without taking a few hours of my life, i would so do it.

It's also a small barrier for new people coming here, unlike unity, cryengine, and unreal there isn't much to start off with working with.

Unity has tons of super cheap models, and unreal / cry both have a built in surplus of stuff and options for others.

Sure everyone, eventually builds out their own stuff, but being able to slam a large amount of areas together using a hundred bucks worth of models, gets people excited.

I mean heck i've spent a week working out a castle area just so I can test things, code wise, and get a feel for how the character controller is going to work. I would of rather dropped 3 bucks on the model and used it as a place holder till I finish things up.

Also weapons, would be nice, and since we get speed trees, having a bunch of nice ones there would be a good option, cause our licenses only have a few textures / base models to tweak with.

I'm slowly building up a collection to turn over to Cooper, but been hit with crazy real life, so don't have a bunch of things prepped to great quality. Just a ton of low quality stuff.

Unity is fine with people using their assets in other engines.

You can buy the entirety of Heroes Journey right now. I think it has like 200 weapon models.

So question Cooper, is the "store pieces" ready but lacking dev interest so no need to "turn" it on, cause it's empty.

OR

Is it not built cause we haven't shown enough interest in it?

I ask cause if it's there but just empty, I could see about getting some modeler friends, to chip in and help me crank out a bunch of stuff. However I don't want you guys to build out the system from scratch have a bunch of inital packages then I have to slow down, and no other interest.

Also did you ever answer my question about speed tree's and being able to sell them, in regards to ones we create from scratch?

Also will you accept textures only, for things like terrain / heightmap painting.
