Okay, just so I can be clear, do the leaf billboards move independently of the branches?

Ahha!  That is the answer I was looking for.  So you are saying the leaves do not shake or roll as they do in the speedtree modeler, they only move with the branch.  This I can get to happen.  The branches move and the leaves move with them, but there is no actual leaf billboard motion.  Is this confirmed to be the only type of motion we can get inside heroengine?  If it is, that is fine and I can move on, but I would like to know as it would be nice to have the option to have leaf motion in limited circumstances.

Thanks for the answer ToY-Krun.

Thank you for the reply!  It's nice to know there are people who will try to help out there.

Unfortunately I have tried everything you suggested below.  I created a new file without changing any settings.  I created a new tree with the basic RT templates (standard everything) with the provided textures, enabled wind and ran it through the compiler then to heroengine.  No luck. . . just like every other tree I have tried, I get branch movement and no leaf movement.  Oddly enough, while I was trying to find a solution to this I turned off motion at the branch level and left it on for leaves and I still get branch movement in heroengine.  I have gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall speedtree just in case I screwed something up, and still there is no change.

     Any other suggestions?

I have been trying several different combinations on speedtrees with no luck for leaf movement.  Is there anyone else who has gotten wind to work on the leaves from speedtree 6.2.2 in heroengine and if so could you let me know what selections you have active and which are not?

Thank you for the quick answer!  I thought that the colors might need to be changed in the textures, but thought I would ask anyways.  The wind was the more important question.  I have turned off the wind effect on the branches but still am unable to get the leaves to move.  Any advice anyone might have to make the leaves move would be appreciated.

Hello all,

My name is Jason and I am a self employed business person with a lifetime unhealthy obsession with video games.  I grew up with Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy (the original) and much more.  I have enjoyed many types and genres of games over the years and was amazed with the idea of the first MMO game I played. . . Everquest.  This was the ideal style of game for me and I have been playing MMOs ever since. . . until a few months ago.
Unfortunately MMOs have not changed much over the years.  You choose a class, kill lots of things, gather lots of stuff and maybe make some stuff that almost anyone can make.  At end game you do one of the three end game options. . . these are always PVP. . . and maybe a raid or dungeon option (or your choice of several).  In my opinion developers have forgotten what video games were. . . and should be about.  What is that you may ask?  Well, I believe that if you want to keep players interested you have to do only one thing. . . MAKE THE PLAYER FEEL IMPORTANT.
There are a few games that do this, and these games are successful and growing.  Eve Online. . . whether you like it or not, can make the player feel important and special (or so I hear. . . I haven't actually played it).  My daughter plays minecraft and so do millions of people across the globe because they feel part of something that makes them feel important.
My goal is to bring this feeling of importance to a fantasy MMO.  Having played video games since the original Atari and running RPGs from D&D to Werewolf: The Apocolypse (yes, I know my nerd is showing), I think I have some exceptional ideas of how to make the player feel special and important, which is exactly what the player wants.
And that is my goal, and the goal of my team of one with no programming or art creation experience (other than the Basic programming language from the 1980s).  I have been learning 3ds Max and getting familiar with Heroengine.  I know that I have the time, desire, resources, and intelligence to make the game that I think gamers want, so hopefully a few years from now I will be announcing beta testing for a new and different type of MMO.

Thank you all for reading!  I will be bothering you all on the forums on a regular basis as I try to learn how to create a living world!

Art & Art Pipeline / Speedtree Questions

Hello all,

I have been attempting to create various trees for use in my world and I am experiencing a few issues which hopefully someone can help me with.
First, on the speedtree modeler I can get wind to affect the leaves with no problem, however this does not seem to carry over to my world when I import them.  The trunk and branches seem to move. . .at least at the first branch level, but leaves do not.  Am I doing something wrong or is this just the way it is with speedtree trees?
Also I am able to adjust the various color setting on speedtree to get excellent and varied colors using stock leaf textures.  These settings do not seem to move over to the game world.  I am aware that there is a leaf coloring option in the heroengine, but it definitely does not look the same.  Is it possible to get the color changes made on speedtree to import with the tree or is this not an option?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer!

Hello there,

First, allow me to apologize for posting here.  I don't see the option in my account to start a new post, so I am asking my question here by quoting, where it is at least partly applicable.
I have been using speedtree and moving the models to my heroblade.  I have noticed that in speedtree the application of light seems to be what is used to alter the appearance of the tree.  Altering the colors on speedtree does not seem to change the colors when I import them to heroblade.  I am aware that you can change the shading of the leaves on the speedtree in the engine, but honestly the appearance is nowhere near the same, so I was wondering if it was possible to import the color changes on the leaves from speedtree.
Second, I have had no problem getting the wind to affect the speedtrees at the branch level, but I was wondering if it was possible to have it work at the leaf level.  I am aware this may not be the best option for areas with large numbers of trees, but it is something I may want to make use of in limited amounts.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Like I said above, there are benefits to speedtree, but it would also depend on how you setup each option. A simple test is to export a couple of things in each option. Place a hundred in one zone of type A, use the swap out to place the same ones in type B, observe results.
