Depends on the way you setup your game.

Is your game an over-the-shoulder camera, a third-person camera, or a first-person camera? Will the body be visible? There's a lot of factors that influence this decision...

I can remember vaguely that they were going to do that in the future, though for a substantial fee :)

So it's always better to document, keep track of changes, and figure it out yourself (With which you learn more).

Yes, you can create a GUI element from a .png image :)

You don't export the png to dds, because the image you posted is not a multiple from 2 (square image), and thus impossible.

Just upload the .png image to the repository, and select it :)

Instead of the books I proposed with their theories, I would also check about rendering environments and how to set them up. That will give you some insights as well in the back-end :)

Usually I don't know the answers, but I know where and how to find them, which I find more important :)

The theory of area designing is a bit more complicated, as it also includes camera tricks, particle tricks, props placement, lighting, actors, item-placement and scripting.

Each major subject has its own book-series (especially lighting and scripting).

I heard that "Ultimate Game Design: Building Game Worlds" by Tom Meigs is a good read about designing worlds and areas specifically.

There is an option in the properties of the heightmap (open the Properties Window) and set the resolution to HALF or even QUARTER to save vertices :)

Won't affect textures :)

It means like the following texture sizes [resolution] :

You change the size of your texture with any decent paint program (Photoshop, GIMP, w.e).

You would want to look at the UV size (it's set to 1.0); you can drag that slider up and down to increase or decrease the resolution in HeroEngine. It's in the terrain panel.

With the operation system that you are running, the installation directory has to be in the lower levels of your primary drive.

You can mimick the HE repository however in each folder you like almost everywhere (as long as the path does not contain spaces or special characters)

It will probably be resolved with keeperofstars' explanation together with properly applying HeroMaterials in 3D Studio Max (2013 does not have any issues).

Open the console window and check that when you spawn the object, an error occurs. You always want to start out in the Console and Error panel.
