A single note i would like to say is, you can do it both server side or client side,.. the server side should use spec oracle system while the client side doesn't require it.
while server is always much trust-able than client but i found the server side way of this implementation has a latency issue ,.. if your players have a little higher latency they will see the cursor changing with delay while the client side doesn't have this issue.

as what i know server doesn't care what cursor players see,.. it only cares where the cursor was when a player clicked ;)

so when reading the community or the wiki . keep in mind my note :)

HJRef also does this ,...  i think you can understand how they added vortex to the FX system if you look at client and server side scripts about it,..

I've done this using Maya to test some systems in my game while im waiting to get my own characters,..
in short :

i downloaded a free model
gave it a Hero Material
renamed the root bone to Bip01
Created the SRB joint
Exported via character and then export tools
and Exported animations separately

That's all ,..
and its rendering in game perfectly.

well done ,.. Wish i was student too :) , with all these responsibilities to my family and having game development dream as the nearly 3rd job , ... i  think my game will be released 10 years later :)

is there any control about XYZ location of an object in a virtual stage? seems it renders them on its 0,0,0 , and models are top of each others.

will it soon possible to able using a 3d model within a gui ? something like rendering the character inside the character sheet UI .. or giving a virtual stage a background image instead of only color ?

The script language isn't really that hard, yes it looks a little unique at the beginning but with having some previous coding experience i think you can quickly learn it.... 
I totally disagree with just copy that , one day you will require a system which does not exist in HJ ref...

Good to know you want to write your next system your self :) ,.. HE community will also help you as soon as you ask .

I guess you ask this because you want a better client which has many effects such as blur and sunshine etc :P I believe HE will add all those interesting effects and shaders soon,... at least i hope it,...
Your idea is also interesting but i think it would require huge amount of programming skills plus high knowledge about both engines and lot of time, which i think i would rather to spend this time on creating my contents and scripts entirely in HE and waiting for HE  client implementation to give us better access to  effects and graphics :P...
But again i guess with having source , you can do that , or either you can create your client with XNA etc..

Anyway CryEngine is also impressive in term of client side effects and graphics,...

I've just found i can use whole animations if i create the npc model and skin it to the skeleton as a part just like all other parts.

I've just found how i can play with parts and slots , ...
For the above example i will use a little extra face to cover those polygons over the pants.
