iPisoft Motion Capture
« on: Dec 31, 11, 03:51:27 AM »

Has anyone here tried using iPi Desktop Motion Capture to create new HE character animations?
I am considering using two kinects and this software to create ours.
Wondering if anyone had experience with this yet.

I will have to add it to my art path, so I can add unique animations.

Looks very interesting. I think I might use it as I'm gonna use a Kinect for my master thesis anyways. From what it looks like it should ease things up a lot ;)

That does look pretty nifty.  No head or finger capture yet but could definitely get some animations done nicely.  I'd shell out for it if I had the funds :P  maybe in a few months.

We're actually talking to some companies that do things like webcam mocap and the like, one of them even has a facial recognition via software and webcam, about publishing an import API from the engine to them. We don't have the resources to fully embrace edge tech like it, but there might be some cool cooperation there.

Yes I have used it. It works almost flawless with 1 Kinect, with 2 Kinects it is flawless. WYSIWYG. The animation data is standard and can be used with Max and Maya, so yes it can be used with HeroEngine.

Thanks Stadi. Did you like using it?

I have a base game character that I need to animate so this looks like the tool for me right now.
So I am looking at the iPisoft Basic version and using two Kinects.
The animations should be good enough for the game play.
Hopefully when we get to cutscenes there will be a facial animation tool we can afford.
After seeing the cutscenes in SWTOR we think that should be used to move the story line in our game as well.

I've used it as well, it seems quite robust and relatively easy to use.  The company has some good tutorials for getting started, though they lack a voiceover, they get the point across.

Personally, I tried the ps3 Eye camera approach, since you can get 3-4 used ones for less than the price of a Kinect, and got decent results despite awful lighting. With good lighting I expect the capture will be even better.  You do need to position them well though, a circle of cameras is ideal.

Also, it seems to be the ONLY affordable motion capture software you can buy, especially without also having to buy a tens-of-thousands-of-dollars camera setup just to get the software.

Yeah it's awesome, definitely a solution for mocap if it's in your price range.

I was looking at some videos on youtube that were using one Kinect only and it seemed to be good enough, I'm thinking of going with one Kinect too :)

I have been following ipisoft for quite some time now and I must say the improvement in the  quality of their captures has been amazing.  This is definitely the way to go if you can't budget for it.

Time to dust off my black belt and get some captures done with the trial!

And.. We had big troubles working out why when you MAX export the skin distorts.. If anyone has that issue the way to fix it is - Skin the object after it is imported.. Skinning before we found distorts bad..

That one skinned object will work with all captures from it too..

I purchased the iPiSoft motion capture product, and the new one is going to be released next month in April.
So if you get it with in 3 months of the new release, you get a free upgrade.
It is suppose to have a variety of updates, including more support for Female characters.
