Social Bunny Farm Game
« on: May 22, 12, 01:25:02 PM »

The Social Reference World is a simple little social farm game, designed to show developers how to think about social games in general. Social Games are massive, but rarely do players interact with one another. We used a hodgepodge of art from various demos, and Bennett whipped up a quick bunny rabbit.

The game is a bit clumsy for an actual game, but its fully playable, and has almost all of the features you would need to make a social game. Players are all in their own farm instances, and they are unique and saved to them. There's a friends list, an inventory system, a store system, and a task and reward system, a click to move system, and an isometric camera.

We made the placement system purposefully obvious. There are two types of "plots". Planting plots, and building plots, and in your game you could make them player placeable, or designer driver, or you could do away with them entirely and just use a collision detection system for all assets. We used a cartoony style, and kept it pretty simple, but there is a fully functional quest builder system, and while we only put in a few crops, one buildable windmill, and a few tasks, that's pretty much all there is to most social games.

Then, just as an experiment, Herb whipped up a quick little cel shader. Most of our assets weren't built for cel shading, and while this is a handful of code changes, it also means you can't really use any of the other default shaders, like speedtree, and you can see some artifacting from shadows, which really shouldn't be used with this type of cel shader anyways, but it looks really nice regardless

Would it be possible to get a cel shader functionality in hero cloud? I found a .fx hlsl and .dds texture to do it, but I dont have a clue on how to implement it?
