[Resolved] Water Issues: Transparency Issues.
« on: Jun 18, 12, 01:21:42 AM »

We are building an ActionRTS Top-Down view game based on the Caribbean theme. However when we set the water transparency to .003 it does not look transparent.

It looks like the cheesy default. We have cube map in place, set appropriate.

Please help...

I would post a screen of your water and of the properties window while the water is selected.

we even tried importing a custom maya ocean map, still does the same thing.. The transparency issue is becoming a big headache..

This is an example of the kind of transparency we want.

Ocean water is low impact. You could modify the ocean wave texture and you cube map to fine tune, but angle of the light and environment scheme will never let ocean water be transparent from all angles, but you will never achieve the scene you have pictured there without major graphical impact. It will take artistry to achieve what you want using the low impact ocean water. You can see my examples on the water page are closer to what you're looking to do.

Hmmm... , with that first example in Coopers Break down of types I think you could easily do some vertex coloring on the sea floor to achieve a very similar effect to the example image you've posted, Omega.  Getting the water to change color based on depth is hard/expensive, painting to the bottom to fake it is pretty easy. :)

Finally found out how to get the water to be SOMEWHAT near what we want.
Its a pain in the ass process.

First you will need to create to mirrors.
The first mirror you set it to the following.

Raise this above the default skybox.  So you cant see it when you make the clouds.
If it is flickering when you look up. RAISE IT MORE..

Continued on next post thread.

Now
Create another mirror
Set it to the following.

Now create a color pallete depending on the depth.
and paint the floor of the water.

I can't begin to say how much you don't want to do that. Did you see the first image I posted, that looked just like the picture you posted? Do you have a more technical artist on your team to talk about scrolling textures? Hacking two transparent water plains together is bonkers.
