[Resolved] Awesomium
« on: Sep 05, 12, 06:29:52 PM »

Regarding the exciting announcement of Awesomium integration, your postings said,

Quote
Developers will be able to create in game UI and interactions

and

Quote
we'll be releasing supporting functionality to allow all developers to use all the standard web technologies including HTML, JavaScript, and Flash / ActionScript in their UI.

So, I am wondering if this is replacing ScaleForm, or will be in addition to it, as they sound like they do some similar things.

Awesomium provides more functionality and flexibility in that you're not just restricted to Flash/ActionScript, and we've had a lot of requests from developers (and, internally) to provide the ability to display dynamic web pages directly in-game for everything from help systems to stores to whatever.

Cheers

I could have been more clear. Due to developer demand for additional web stuff beyond just flash, we've integrated and are providing awesomium to HeroCloud developers instead of Scaleform. And we're pumped about it. It's great tech, and has been great to work with.

May I ask why Scaleform is being replaced?

May I ask if there are plans to have Scaleform available for cloud developers in a later (but not too late) in the future?

Hi Sarrene,

I'm not sure how else to answer your question other than what's already been said. Scaleform is a framework that allows developers to use aspects of flash within the implementation of the engine or game it's been implemented in. Awesomium provides the same functionality as well as other web framework and functionality.

I know what scaleform is, and what i was looking forward most of all was the xml side of scaleform.

Could you link us some information about how Awesomium would work as a gui replacement for scaleform?

XML in the context of Scaleform can mean a number of different things.

Would you please be more specific?

I do not see any API documentation on the wiki or anything with regards to Awsomium, maybe we have to wait for the launch of Hero Engine 2.0?

Sapphire uses Awesomium for a number of client-engine exposed features.

We will document the HSL and external interfaces and usage once when those are released after the initial Sapphire release.

Awesomium Demo v1.0 Walk-Through

correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm not 100% on this, just a though

If our gamers are in full screen in our games, and we add a youtube button, etc in the game, possibly located where the options, etc is.  They could go onto youtube, while in the game still (FullScreenMode), and watch a tutorial on a quest, with a dragable size box to not block there view.  :)

If this is true, then thats awsome.  ;D

This would also be good for forums, high scores, etc

wow, that is one thing I have always hated, exiting fullscreen, and opening youtube.  Now that it can be built into the game, thats just amazing.

Thanks guys.   :)

This is already wired up and working in the engine. If you've played the latest funcom MMO The Secret World, you'll see awesomium at work in a bunch of different ways, and hitting B brings up an in game browser.
