[Resolved] Material Management is Important

In Response to some Recent Confusion About Materials:

Material management is important, because objects that can share the same material, share the same texture, and in most games, textures are the vast majority of storage required on the GPU card, and the number one cause of slower frame rates by the GPU having to continually reload textures due to exhaustion.

Most game studios used to have a dedicated artist librarian who keeps track of materials, and chose sensible & unique material names. 

Now, they use more modern techniques like a spreadsheet or other user-friendly database.  Google Docs's Spreadsheet function works well to collaborate between members of a team who aren't otherwise communicating what their material names are going to be.
