You're meaning a gui can be put in 3D space without using a billboard?  I was not aware of that.  On that wiki link, I did not see what might allow that.  Could you be more specific?

The GUI might become a billboard, I don't know the tech side, just that there's a checkbox in HJ Ref that can instantiate functioning UI into the 3d game world. That link might not be the right link though, I'll ask engineering about it.

If you want a GUI to be in the 3D space, as opposed to being on a gui layer, you must put it on a billboard node.
