Player Characters Traveling on Moving Objects
« on: Apr 01, 13, 09:20:16 PM »

We're wondering how easy it would be to allow player characters to interact with moving objects to use them as a means of travel - the two main uses we're looking at are for subway trains that players can enter and ride in to other parts of the city, and for the more improvised travel method of riding on the roofs of cars.

Moving objects goes along the lines of the "Elevator" request many here are searching for. You basically update the physics and position of a mesh through the server and replicate it to all clients.

With trains, you could make 2 seperate meshes: the train body and the doors. The train can follow a pathnode (make "stops" when requested), and the doors can be opened and closed seperately :)

I asked this question a while back. Its possible, but the main issues may come from a player riding the object through a sync line between areas. We too want to implement a ridable subway system. Worst comes to worst, it will be implemented so the character is stuck into the object rather than being able to move around while riding it.

For a train you can even fake the whole process by making it a seamless 1.0 together with an animated UV on the windows for the added effect.
