best option for placing chat commands

So I'm working on building out a full chat system with multiple channels, and subscriptions for guilds / factions, etc.

I want the player to be able to in the chat field type:  /join trade

And the game will subscribe them to the trade channel.

I know I can make a cmdtemplate script to add the /join as a registered command that will run the scripts with the /join from there I can call my chat scripts for the subscription pieces.

But after I thought about it I can capture that say input via the chat handler then just strip out the /<commands> that I need for various things, then if it's not a chat command for joining or various other things, have it pass down to the command system.

Is there any gains or advantages to doing it either way?
