This topic's an oldie but goodie.  Search "blender" and you'll see lots of discussion*.  Bottom line is it would take FBX support which may be coming at some point, but is not on the horizon.  Strictly 3ds max or Maya for now.

*So much so that "complaining about lack of FBX" is listed in the description of the Art section  ;D.

From what I've been able to find on Maya LT it's a new product that is basically a cutdown version of Maya 2014.  As of yet, Maya 2014 support has not been added to HeroEngine.

However, it also appears that Maya LT will not have MEL or plugin support (I could be wrong, but that's what I've read).  If this is the case, it will not work with our pipeline.  We currently distribute exporter plugins for Max and Maya to create assets that can be used in HeroEngine.

You might take a glance at this thread on polycount discussing Maya LT: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125122

Is there an ETA on support for Maya 2014? I only have this version and am unable to utilize Hero Engine until this is done.
Thanks,

For those that use Blender, has anyone tried this FBX script for Blender:

yeah, it does a decent job and helping everything come over. sometimes the standard obj export / import stuff doesn't work as hot with max / maya it misses a few things.

But this kinda helps pick those loose ends up, is all.

To my knowledge the Blender folks are also working on improving the FBX compatibility in Blender.

Just thought I would re-ask about Maya LT. Or FBX or better integration of your asset pipeline eta.

Or maybe I missed it. Going to have a go at seeing if Maya LT will work. Maybe little messing around with your files that plug-in to Maya will work, I am waiting for the 2 days right now.

Maya LT now supports "Mel scripting" so the topic is out of date.

"They is a plug-in manager, don't know if it works yet."

Also maybe you can contact MayaLT to get your Game Engine listed on the File > Game Engine export. It supports direct unity and unreal export. This would be great for your HeroEngine if Maya LT will do a quick patch on desktop subscription, to add the feature to export directly for your engine. Don't know if you can just add the Engine to file > Engine export. Still digging.

Big put off to your software for Indies is probably your engine needs Maya or Max. Art pipeline. I think you should change Art Pipeline to high priority. Or Maybe I missed something, while I am digging through your data.

Will make HeroEngine more friendly, if you had a more extending pipeline. I am a Unity Pro User. I can afford the Maya or Max software, I just would like to help Indies get a easier foothold on your software.

It seems your forum is going dead. If not the Sub paid will just be a donation to support this engine, if not planning on a plug for better pipeline integration.

We're always looking at how we can improve the pipeline, but it is just one large important task among many ;)

I'll take a look at Maya LT again, it is possible they've included sufficient functionality in it to properly handle our plugins at this point.

@LogitechDog  - The issue, as noted in this News post, is that the current HeroEngine art plugins for Maya rely on a proprietary library and require interfaces that are not available in Maya LT.

Improving the art import pipeline is definitely an ongoing effort behind the scenes.

Ok thanks. By the way Maya is up to 2016. So if I buy it I would have to pay another 817,95 for Subscription, for older mayas.

Since autodesk stupid way of making they plugins .mll files dependent on version. Instead of platform independent and a middle man(Wrapper) to handshake between the plugin and the versions.

When would 2016 plugin normally come out because I see it says 2014. I can just work on mechanics and level design of terrain, Hud, and placeholders for 3d objects, for now.

Or you think by that time, maya 2017 will be out lol. So just buy it and then export assets when you can. They change so much it does not just need recompiling for mayaX? Part of they I am a annoying company policy.

I like Blender myself and Substance Painter. I just got MayaLT for animation, guess I will just insult maya for been indie unfriendly. Thinking indies do not need these things and they bad business model for plugin design.

Maya 2016 just came out this week - they've been fairly consistent about shipping during the NAB show.

The Maya 2015 is available from tomorrow with the new update.

Maya (and Max) support typically lags about 3 months months due to 1) bugs in Maya (and Max), and 2) the additional dependency on the proprietary library we use for exporting.

Last time I checked, subs were for at least the last version and the new version.  And, most developers stick to whichever they started product development on because it's too risky to upgrade Max or Maya during production.

Cheers
