Transparent and glowing object
« on: Jul 14, 13, 05:40:05 AM »

Is it possible to have a glowing object also have transparency?

As the glow and transparency maps are both in the alpha of the diffuse and the hero material option in max only lets you select either glow mask or gradient/mask.

We want this type of effect for glowing holographic interfaces or advertisements.

Any ideas will be welcome. Thanks.

If it's any help, I think that the holograms in SWTOR are glowing as well as se through.

Why not use 2 textures? One texture for the transparancy, and the other texture for the glow ?

Well first off, remember SWTOR used a source license from several years back.  I'm fairly sure that large parts of the renderer were entirely rewritten and the rest heavily modified.

To accomplish transparency and glow, you could always create a custom shader, that is of course the most difficult option.

I'm still leaning towards the make the model with the transparent effect. Then apply a mesh particle that handles the glow effect you want / need.

That definitely sounds like a more practical way to get a reasonably nice effect :)
