Post development in production
« on: Jul 23, 13, 11:33:09 AM »

Hello!

If we reach a production (or pre-production version, alpha or beta) version of the game, how we can do further modifications on it, I mean releasing new versions, bug fixes, minor changes?

Will we have multilple environments (eg. development -> staging -> production), and pass the code versions through the stages?

Will the game client update the installed game every time its started, when we post a new version?

Thanks!

the production servers are different to the development ones , not sure about a staging server ( are you thinking a beta patch test server? )  and yep you can push new data from dev to production

When you reach different stages the devs help you put together a patcher for the player client, as well as setup the push methods for making changes to your live environment, so you can build in development and then when happy with changes push the content down to your live server.

If you look at some of the wiki information on having source, you can see some of the process in more detail.

Take a look at the chart on this page about ID space Partitioning.

For us HeroCloud users, there are the Development world(s), Staging world(s) (a.k.a. Alpha Worlds), and finally Production world(s) where the end-users play the gold version of the game.
