Placing both models + textures in same directory
« on: Feb 04, 14, 12:23:26 AM »

Can someone explain to me why placing models and their respective textures in the same directory is problematic or undesirable?

I have never found it problematic to house the textures in the same folder as the HGM , in fact as long as the texture stays in the same location you can move the HGM wherever you like. With characters that share dynamic parts , a shared texture file can be handy though.

location never matters as long as the relative path to finding said textures never changes, all will be right with the world.

From there it's just a matter of opinion. As WWZ points out you see it sometimes with dynamic characters, or in cases where a texture will be used / shared with other assets that a "common" folder gets used to hold those assets, as to prevent duplication of textures, in the repository. Or seen when you are doing texture atlasing and the atlas has several different textures for several different assets / models.

Some people choose to make a texture folder setup and use that for all of their textures. (this can be useful when having multiple people working on assets, / the same asset, as it can make for a pre-defined configuration that all artists can mimic on their machines locally, so when they are working or using textures, they always match up with the relative path to them.

But once again it's all preference.
