There are multiple potential things that could prevent the engine from writing out updates:
  • not connected/lost connection to the database
  • area.dat or room.dat files marked as "deleted" in the repository by one of the developers (the engine is not able to update deleted files, so the data is not written out for the client to use.  The server representation would still be correctly persisted)
  • developer has broken or interfered with the $EDIT System node (_EditHandlerClassMethods or its overrides)
  • the area is locked from editing F5 (Utilities Interface) -> Tools Tab -> Area Edit Locking
  • account does not have permission to modify areas (through the Account Management System web interface)
  • Developer modified the required DOM class or field definitions
  • Modifications were made in a "play" instance, not the "edit" instance
  • bad/invalid data present in a heightmap import

In this case, one of the members of the development team modified (case 6 above) the field VertexData's write strategy to never persist.  Consequently, the engine ignored modifications to that field and vertex data was not written out for new or modified heightmaps.

We reverted the DOM field VertexData's write strategy to its original value of "lazy" in this game world.

Care should be taken to never modify any DOM definition marked "required".

No, it is not currently exposed in a manner accessible to you.
