3D Studio Max 2014 Hero Character Tools crash
« on: Jun 09, 15, 08:02:46 PM »

Hello,

Im getting HeroProcess.exe has stopped working under 2 processes on the export. Once when it is on the "optimizing vertex cache" and again on "resection the file". This only happens on a dynamic character export.

And have you successfully exported a dynamic character before?

I had a successful export over the weekend and now new exports, using the same settings and model, are giving me an empty model in engine, which is why I wanted to try the character tool.

Is there a checklist of things that will break a character? I checked material name(~dt2_ prefix is there), I made sure maps were pointing to textures in the art depot. Character is skinned, units are set to meters and 0.01 meters for system units. I used the hero model viewer and meshes exist in the files.

I suddenly went from base character running around to floating name and no model. Ive changed references in the par, dat, and dyc files to point to working hgms in sample folders. That process worked as well when I started my test exports and now nothing.

The Character tools panel is mainly just for the initial export, it helps you get the right folders and files setup in the depot.  Once you have that, you usually just want to export individual parts etc.

So, to be clear, you're having an issue when trying to use the "dynamic character part" export - and the issue is HeroProcess.exe stops working and gives you an error?  Or are you getting the error when using the Hero Character Tools panel, presumably after pressing "Create Character Files"?

In the HeroBlade, when you say you've got the floating names with no models, are you getting any errors in the console?

Sorry, the error happens when using hero character tools and pressing create character files. Im on max 2014, have to double check my service packs, and using the latest pipeline tools. The hero export script works without a heroprocess error.

But in heroblade, im getting no console errors just empty npcs when using the /henpc create "name" command. Regardless of which export I use.

Ok, so I need more sleep. I miss typed the model name in the dat file. So empty character problem solved and I can continue on.

The original error with HeroProcess and hero character tools still remains. Thread (that went all over the place, sorry) can be marked resolved if you like.

Ok, that simplifies things greatly, thanks for the update.  I'll take a look at the 2014 character tools, not sure what's up there, but it's great you've found a way to make progress for now :)
