Should I give it a try
« on: Aug 05, 15, 02:44:24 PM »

Hello!

I'm a first year student of Computer Science and I have always been fond of playing games, programming, modelling. I do a lot of that lately but I'm still a bit inexperienced. So I've got a question: Is it hard to use this engine properly? I would love to give it a try at least, though it's quite expensive for a student...

That depends on what you define as "properly" - if you're willing to learn the engine, then there's no reason why you can't make some form of online game.

I don't know, I just wonder if it's overwhelming for an inexperienced user.

You can peruse the HeroWiki and see how it looks to you.

I am not a programmer, so I find it a bit difficult in some ways. However, I love messing with the engine and learning the scripting language. The community here will usually steer you in the right direction when you have trouble.

In short, I do recommend you spend the money and get a year subscription. I haven't really accomplished a lot myself, but I don't feel I have lost or wasted anything and am now in my second year here.

This is one of the few engines that can make an MMO. MMOs are one of the biggest games that can be made, and take a lot to make. As with any engine, it will take time to learn as its not like the plug and go type with little engines.

Hero Engine is easy to jump into, but hard to master. It's easy to go into game, add props, things of that nature. It takes a little bit longer though to figure out all of the massive feature set, and to learn good practices for programming. Once you get past that initial phase though it all starts to make sense and is pretty easy to work with.
