Herb I believe I have further info for you on this.

type in a filter for the search...

create a new field, and try to add it to a class.

I get the error talked about, however, if i remove my filter in class/fields tab, then try to add the
field, it works fine.

I then tested several new fields, with having no filter typed in and it worked every time.
perhaps having a filter typed in (especially one that doesnt match your new field) causes the list to refresh only those fields that your filter matches... 

its a start anyway.
