Here's a nice summary from HE-Scott about debugging HSL:

Debugging various systems in HSL is a mixture of using println statements in your code, the gui analysis tool, the debug system http://wiki.heroengine.com/wiki/$DEBUG to log events, and cli commands http://wiki.heroengine.com/wiki/Cli to gather information about things related to the server/client gom and dom. When using the CLI the most common commands for pure debugging are sn(show node) and qn(query nodes) to help you identify what nodes are loaded currently in the server or client gom. http://wiki.heroengine.com/wiki/Debug details and expands on some of the topics mentioned and goes over some best practices when debugging HSL.
